The man behind the precise translations

Dr. Geoffrey S. Koby, CT, co-owner and president, has been providing precise legal, financial, and business translation and related services from both German and Dutch/Flemish into English for over 25 years. High quality, rapid responsiveness, flexibility, and adherence to delivery deadlines characterize his work. Dr. Koby was educated in the United States and studied abroad in Germany in both high school and college. He holds a Ph.D. in German from the University of Wisconsin – Madison. In the 1990s, he also was licensed and sold insurance and securities.

Dr. Koby started his translation business in 1995. Assigned to teach translator training courses at Kent State University, he decided that his translation teaching needed to be complemented by professional practice to keep up with developments in the field and to teach based on professional experience. In 1995, he took the] American Translators Association Certification Exam for German>English to launch his business. According to the ATA website, “ATA certification is one of the industry’s most respected and recognized credentials for translators. … ATA Certification offers qualified and independent evidence that a translator possesses professional competence in a specific language combination. It recognizes translators with the knowledge and skills necessary to provide quality translation.” Dr. Koby is ATA-certified in German>English Translation (since 1996) and Dutch>English translation (since 2004).

Dr. Koby is deeply involved in serving colleagues in translation and interpretation through his volunteer work with the American Translators Association. He started his work there as a grader for the German>English certification exam in 2006, and has served in various roles, including chair, on the Certification Committee since 2008. From 2014-2020, he served on the Board of Directors of the ATA, and continues to serve on various committees, including Board-level committees. He also serves as president of ATA’s non-profit charitable organization, the American Foundation for Translation and Interpretation (AFTI).

Dr. Koby’s professional translation activities are a complement to his work as a Professor of Translation Studies at Kent State University, where he regularly teaches courses on business, legal, and financial translation along with courses in general translation as well as other specializations such as scientific or literary translation. He has also translated poetry (Stoppelbrand/Stubble Fire, 2014), and a book on the history of science (Einstein’s Opponents. The Public Controversy about the Theory of Relativity in the 1920s).
